The notes represent a chronological diary, an association of professional and personal interests. I am interested in complexity of the world, the poetry of the by-the-way observations and the power of the stolen words.Gajahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16196057637972464655noreply@blogger.comBlogger42125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6644330556396303990.post-83357457773608702132015-10-18T14:02:00.001-07:002015-10-28T03:00:10.033-07:00#mobilemoteltrogir Motel Trogir was built in 1965 at the western entrance to the town of Trogir, according to the design of the architect Ivan Vitić, representing today one of its neuralgic points, having endured years of devastation due to unresolved property relations.

Motel trogir is re-mobilised in a maquette prototype. In a zipped format it circulates by mail & social networks, contradicting its present passive analogous nature.

The postcards were designed in collaboration with product designer Nuša Jelenec.
While researching current needs in the neighbourhood where the museum is located, our multydisciplinary collective organised several events and workshops with the local community.

A set of commoning actions such as: swapping local seedlings exchange, balcony gardening workshop, urban foraging field trips and a temporary local food swap market were planned in order to raise awareness about reasons for strenghtening the local food resilience, social interactions and creating a supporting link between the cultural institution and the local residences.

Mentors: Digna Kosse, Lucas Mullié (Food- curators). Local participants: Gaja Mežnarić Osole, Jan Kikelj, Leonora Jakovljević, Nuša Jelenec, Katarina Dekleva
This publication is a chronological collection of notes and partial propositions based on a series of authors field-trips to forage in the urban wilds. The exploration assembles a harvest of situated knowledges, gathered through picking up edible plants, walking, talking to people and organising workshops.

The work interlaces the observations with creative reflections by introducing contemporary tools and activities for local co-existence such as the local map of edible landscapes, food labelling system, collective foraging economies, edible currencies, recipes, edible preserves and curiosity interviews.

The work was made as a part of design biennal - BIO50.

The workshop aim was to think through such an example and ideate new synergies between the man and the environment, plan collaborative activities, find new ways to use the plant for food production, healing and well-being and/or designing new sustainable materials ...

Local experts from the fields of sociology, biology, pharmacy and political sciences together with the interested community of participants collaboratively explored the potentialities of edible invasive species.

After informative introductions, participants started to prototype their own future scenarios. The event ended with the round of reflections and a discussion to set the ground for further actions.

Link to the workshop's webpage.
It was served at Pop-up dom, a one-month open platform for presentation, exhibition, sales and development of Slovenian design. The concept of the dinner was connected to space exploration and the future of convivial eating. We designed the space and the food and asked Slaviša to make space music according to the atmosphere of the served dish.
Seeker explores in an experimental way the integration of the technological, ecological and social systems that enable long-term survival in a spaceship. Instead of keeping the various functions connected to living, working and technology separated, the Seeker community sets out to create hybrid, closed systems that favour sustainability and stimulate interconnection.

Trapez's contribution was to research on space eating and cooking possibilities and connect it with local rituals and ingredients. Two aspects of such considerations especially evoked our attention. Firstly how to use waste as an urban vegetation, a rejected ready-made, to build self-sustainable cooking appliances. And secondly how to design an eating/cooking experience to become a participatory act, supporting social interaction and exchange of situated knowledges (connected to our locality and trans-locality) while exploring the line between the limitation of resources alongside with the needs and desires of our coincidental space compagnons.

We decided to design a kitchen as the primal space of socialising and put the cook at the centre of attention. We served Space Ričet and Space Potica, two very typical local dishes, adjusted to the limitations of space cooking. For Ričet the food distiller was built in order to simulate the taste of meat which is hard to preserve on a long distance trip. We decided to use the perfume instead.
It is an event where students have to invite their own guests that might be intertested in their proposals. Each student has a 5 minute presentation and 5 min feedback from the audience.
It was amazing to see, how the pressure of the event forced us to become clear about our research interests. In the last 14 days, thanks to Bianca, Svenja, Jenny and Hannah, we framed and shaped our thoughts very successfully, so the event came out really good. I keep on thinking how the last minute focus almost always produces very good solutions, since the body and the mind have to concentrate on the present moment and some sort of pragmatic creativity emerges.
Since it was the first time in Design Futures history that it did not rain on the day of the event, we could extend our conversations preparing a picnic on the College Green. Such a lucky day.
He is one of the important figures, researching design futures from the perspective of social and environmental sustainability. I was impressed by the way he was presenting his thoughts. So clear, so simple and honest. He used everyday life experience (objects) for explaining big things which made the lecture very understandable and imaginative.

He stressed out the importance of consistent minorities within and outside design practice that are opening up spaces for practicing new set of values like quality of relations (interactions), quality of slowness (time), quality of human scale (scale), the quality of well done (work) and the quality of the context (place). Moving from mechanical towards the ecological model of our understanding, he defends the importance of complexity and multitude (which functions within a certain limit).

He also mentioned few authors worth reading: Richard Sennett (Together and Craftsman), Victor Margolin, Latour.

At the end of the lecture, some nice Italian wine was served (which I hardly appreciate while staying in London), closing monday night into a lovely package of inspirational experience.

I just came home from the New Cross Commoners field trip around Deptford. We explored the riverfront and its history related to the themes of commons and enclosures. It is sad to see how a lot of new and luxorious buildings are growing in the area, ignoring the sights rich heritage and forcing local residents to move out to cheaper areas. Deptford used to be a Royal Dockyard. It was also a homeland for sailors, coming from all over the world. Today the riverfront is almost inaccessible, since the land is being sold to (Chinese) capitalist stakeholders. (A B O U T D E P T F O R D). With the help of the local connoisseurs we found the way to the river bank at the time where the waters were low, so we could afford to enjoy the view and have a lovely picnic.
Bryan Boyer and Justin W. Cook from the Helsinki Design Lab presented an inspiring talk at our department wide seminar series ‘Design Means…’ on Wednesday 15th May. Bryan and Justin have been on a whirlwind trip, presenting the findings from their strategic design research activities to design institutions and government organisations around the world. The Lab will be closing soon, so check out their projects and download a free PDF version of their brilliant ‘Recipes for Systemic Change’ and other literature before the blog disappears! We started our exploration with listening to an informative lecture by Steve on the history of the reserve and the way nature is being preserved and cultivated by the local volunteers. We learned how to make meadows, about the invasive and local plants, how to cut wood and maki paths, how to make homes for the insects and worms and many more. After the field trip we set up a picnic on a meadow, sharing the food we prepared and brought along.
New Cross Gate Cutting / Brockley Nature Reserve is a little space along the New Cross Gate Railway where wild life is preserved in its original sense. Since the territory was inappropriable and therefore to expensive to house, it was transformed into a natural reserve, which is today operating with the help of local volunteers. All though the space gives impression of being completely self-sustained, the group of volunteers is helping to cultivate the nature in a sustainable manner, keeping the habitat under control and taking care of the local plants and animals.
Every second saturday of the month visitors are allowed to enter the reserve. A big part of the reserve is covered in trees, with the exception of two meadows, perfect for weekend picnics and outdoor discussions.

Visiting the space, we were discussing about the possibilities of making the space more accessible to local people without threatening the wildlife and abusing the natural resources. How could we use the natural reserve more often, how to engage with the space, apart from being volunteers?

He was just making the big exam for the black cab for which he has to know every little street of London, how to come from point A to point B in the shortest time and all the points of interest that this big city offers. While driving through Altgate he showed me this little fish stall called Tubby Isaacs which was established in 1919. Placed around big fancy buildings it looks like a fragile piece of history, lost in time and space.
It was one of the lectures I was so excited to see. I got to know her work through her book called DESIGN ACT: Socially and Politically Engaged Design Today––Critical Roles and Emerging Tactics, a collection of inspiring works and frameworks from various designers and architects.

Her talk was great. She was speaking about social innovation throught her projects and models from a very fresh and common-sense perspective.

'Design as a practice of amplifying, mapping and scaling (Ezio Manzini school of thought) is moving from material change to social change by making new connections between existing things. Social innovation explores and intervenes on the level of lifestyles. They build up social practices that can be considered as a living organism involving dynamic relations among ‘stuff’, images (ideals and conventions) and ‘skills’ (know-how, knowledge) (Social Practices Model). Everyday practices, objects or images have the potential to generate important information and understanding of our contemporary norms and values ...'
Edible handwork, efficiency on its best. I joined Trapez, a group of designers and food lovers before I left Ljubljana. As it came out a lot of the members moved to London so we formed a dislocated team with Sasa, Nina, Ana, Miha and me.
Sasa got invited to exhibit in a gallery and she proposed we can use the opportunity to make a food project. We all hate winters in London and didn't have any break since September so we decided to create a 'Resort', a series of dining holiday trips to exotic places. A holiday for an evening. For the first one we left London to jump in the seas of Hawaii.
The garden belongs the the project called Burges Food Project and is organised by the local community of volunteers.
It was a cloudy morning when I arrived to the location, a messy-with-a-lot-of-thought garden. The group of New Cross commoners were introduced to basic principles of permaculture, about the inputs and outputs in the garden which can be applicable to the way we live and function in the society too. Water provides growth. Making a common space provides new communities, friendships, knowledge. After the lecture our work force helped to water the plants, clean up dry branches and instal the community board. It was a nice feeling, working with hands under the sky, after a while of living a digital and concrete life.
We all brought some food for pizza and toasts and we tested the open oven made out of mud and hay. Food didn't taste that good for such a long time. When I came home I felt so happy.
While browsing through the design staff at Goldsmiths I bumped into her name and web page called Brave New Alps. Her on going phd work, concerning how to make alternative (non-affirmative) design practices and groups viable in contemporary capitalistic system, was really close to my own concerns, so I e-mailed her and we set up a date.

We drank a cup of ginger tea at student's bar Cafe Natura, while talking about design and politics, the necessity of engaged position alongside with design education and the attractive spark of radical alternatives. She introduced me her idea about setting up a commoning group in New Cross, which would open a new sharing space for all the locals who wanted to join. We would read texts concerning sharing, micro-politis, housing but also cook, make workshops, trips, body exercises and new friends.

I was super excited about having a group, meeting new people and learning about the area where I live, but know so little about it. I joined in.
The antagonistic approach is considered to be un-ethical and sometimes even a bit barbaric. But if we try to look at it through the lens of participation it suddenly appears in an interesting role, as a 'micro-political practice' that allows participant to become an engaged member who insists on his beliefs even if they are different from the others (Miessen 2010: 93).
In that context a french political philosopher Chantal Mouffe suggests a new model of 'friendly' agnosticism which she calls 'agonistic model of democracy or agnostic pluralism' in which as she claims the opposite sides are not in the friend-enemy relation, but are each others 'adversaries' or friendly enemies with a common symbolic space. This so called 'conflictual consensus' is to be understood as a conflictual struggle of different interpretations on the same subject. Bringing back the passions and desires in a political dialog, mobilising them towards democratic designs (Mouffe 2000). Strangely my cultural prop that we had to present in the context of Society and Individual seminar, within which also this essay is being constructed, was a condom. The reason why is because it was representing a junction of two values that are strongly important to me: one is pleasure and the other is responsibility, so I coined a new value which I called 'pleasure with responsibility'. I believe it strangely overlaps with the position that Mouffe is talking about.
